There are many stories in the Scripture that people overlook. Sometimes, it’s so easy for us to look at things on the surface that we don’t look at what is hidden beneath—and there are many hidden gems in Scripture that not many people see.
I would like to point out one of those hidden treasures. This story is found in the book of Hosea. In this book, Yahweh is begging His people to return to Him. What I find interesting though is what Yahweh tells Hosea in chapter 1…
When Yahweh spoke at first by Hosea, Yahweh said to Hosea, “Go, take for yourself a wife of prostitution and children of unfaithfulness; for the land commits great adultery, forsaking Yahweh.” So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim; and she conceived, and bore him a son.
I’m sure that you find it strange that Yahweh tells Hosea to take a prostitute to be his wife. But if you read on and you look deeper into the story, I believe the reason is there in plain sight for all to see.
Yahweh was using Hosea as an example of His love for Israel by showing that love through Hosea.
I will betroth you to me forever. Yes, I will betroth you to me in righteousness, in justice, in loving kindness, and in compassion. I will even betroth you to me in faithfulness; and you shall know Yahweh.
Yahweh keeps telling His people to turn back to Him and He will accept them with unconditional love. He isn’t asking for a physical offering, He is asking for His people to come back to Him and offer themselves, to repent, to love Him again.
But still, they wouldn’t listen. And in chapter 3, it appears that Hosea’s wife didn’t turn from her unrighteous acts, but went back to doing them. It doesn’t give that much information on what happened, but it is clear that some trouble occurred that caused him to have to buy her back…
Yahweh said to me, “Go again, love a woman loved by another, and an adulteress, even as Yahweh loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods, and love cakes of raisins.” So I bought her for myself for fifteen pieces of silver and a homer and a half of barley. I said to her, “You shall stay with me many days. You shall not play the prostitute, and you shall not be with any other man. I will also be so toward you.”
How many of us would do what Hosea had done? Probably not very many of us would. She had been unfaithful to him and yet, he takes her back, showing her love towards her. This is the kind of love Yahweh was trying to show to Israel, and that is the kind of love He is trying to show to us.
Yahweh sent Yahushua to buy us back.
For you were bought with a price, therefore esteem Elohim in your body and in your spirit, which are of Elohim.
Take words with you, and return to Yahweh. Tell Him, “Forgive all our sins, and accept that which is good: so we offer our lips like bulls. “I will heal their waywardness. I will love them freely; for My anger is turned away from him.
Okay, Israel has turned far away from Yahweh and they practically have thrown all He has given them into the dirt and still, after all this time, HE STILL LOVES THEM.
How many times have we rebelled against Yahweh and yet he still blesses us? How many times have we messed up and still, He shows us how much he loves us?
The last point I would like to make is this: Hosea could have turned Yahweh down and said, “no, I don’t want to take a prostitute for a wife, what would people think of me?” No, he trusted Yahweh and went with it. He didn’t make any excuses, he just took her as his wife.
When Yahweh calls us to do something, even if it seems out of the ordinary, we are given 2 choices, to say yes and to say no. Or we can shake our fists at Yahweh and miserably chafe against our circumstances until we get our way, or we can submit to Yahweh’s will for our life and look to Him to be satisfied. Only one of those choices will have bad consequences. When Yahweh calls, we need to answer or we might end up floating around in a big fish like Jonah.
Trust Yahweh. He wont disappoint you if you answer him rightly. You have nothing to lose if you say yes to Him. When He orchestrates something, He will make it happen. You just have to stand firm and believe that He will. For it is your faith that will prove who you are.
